The course AS2 (Introductory Animal Genetics), is a eight (8) credit unit course designed for undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Animal Science, and related programs. The course is expected to provide a good knowledge base for the future manpower for genetic improvement of livestock resources towards a sustainable production of livestock. It explains the rudimentary biology, starting with the cell. Major components of the cell were treated including the nucleus which contains the genetic materials. Since genetics is mainly concerned with transmission of genetic information from parents to offspring, pattern of inheritance was also discussed. The ingenious contributions made by fathers of genetics (Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel and host of others) were highlighted. The course also provides basic knowledge for biotechnological applications in livestock genetic improvement and the development of genotypes that are adapted to our environment. The course will provide a basic foundation for students intending to take up Animal breeding and Genetics as a Career in the future.
